OK, here is my best recollection, something that I will never forget!
Purchased in the fall of 1973 when I was 15, from Adventure Cycles, in Olathe KS. The shop was all dirt, and sold Penton, American Eagle (yes I had one of those too), CZ’s and Monark’s.
Heck, where else could a 15 year old hang out, shoot pool, learn about bikes, listen to guys 15 years older cuss, and stare at Playboy folds plastered all over the shop!
(I might be able to find a real picture of what it did to me next – a real trick or treat)
I remember my ol’friend Jim Stuhr gave me a ride to the track (I was not old enough to drive yet).
Racing my GS Monark in Butler Missouri (just south of KC) in the 125 expert class, I got hungry and tried to eat the cross bar in a set of whoops on a semi-muddy day.
I was great in the mud, but if you remember, the foot pegs on that GS where round, with a stop weld on the end and not even spring loaded.
Well naturally my boot slipped and the open face / JOFA setup was not enough.
I was taken to the hospital, my head wrapped in a towel (I could not see) and while Jim was walking me into the hospital, up a small set of steps, which he failed to tell me about, I tripped and fell AGAIN!.
I left missing 2 front teeth; a third was wired for the summer to save it – that really sucked.
Then I got a full ride on a tricked out Hodaka Combat Wombat after that (no they could not keep me off the bikes); We ported it, put a pumper carb on it, made our own airbox (remember that Velcro cover over the GS BING Carb? On the Monark?) and replaced as much metal with plastic that we could. 2 races later the Honda Elsinore was introduced and changed the MX world for ever!
I suppose I had that bike for 6 months before selling it. Did I fail to mention, that while everyone said a Sachs motor, while not a great shifter (but slightly better than a Zundapp) could never be broken? Well I broke the main shaft!
There you go.
