Only known photo of Marty Moates on a Monark

Marty Moates, a one time Monark rider passed away a few weeks ago. Early last year, Scott Wallenberg had a brief conversation with Marty and he passed this along to all of us...

Scott writes...."Last year Marty revealed to me that he was once a Monark rider! I was stunned as I had never heard that before. He bought his Monark at Competition Cycle in San Clemente. His Mom went with him to pick it up and did not have a truck or trailer so they laid it in the back of the station wagon to bring it home.

He previously raced a Sherpa S 125 without much success but he told me that the Monark was a huge jump in machinery and he begun enjoying success. He won his first Pro race ever on it. This is the only known picture we have of him on it. It came from a "Mini-Vue" that he bought trackside back in 1973."

On 12/16/06, David Moates, Marty's brother contacted Vintage Monark and added the following...

David writes..."My mother bought my brother, Marty Moates, a Monark. I don't know recall what happened to it. He rode it at the same time Marty Smith had his...Carlsbad, Saddleback, etc. I remembered it was very fast and very smooth. Quite different from my brother's Bultaco Sherpa S (1972). I guess we may never know now. Thanks for your website and for listening....David"
